"Last year I went on a personal journey (or maybe a bit of a rabbit hole) through the Enneagram. I was absolutely obsessed with reading about my types, talking to friends about their types and attempting to type my husband. As a former psychology major I love all things personality typing – especially if it means knowing my loved ones better and at a deeper level.

"During my exploration into everything Enneagram I realized that my gifting tendencies had become a bit stagnant. I challenged myself to find the most perfect present for each of my beloved friends and family for whom I knew their Enneagram numbers. Using the inspiration of Enneagram numbers seemed like the perfect inspiration for more personalized gifts for my people, so with the Enneagram as my guiding force I read through the types, made a list of possible gifts and then hit the ground shopping.

"As a 3 wing 2, I always want the people around me to feel loved and cared for – and I want to get really GOOD at it so that they continue to feel that love and care. While my intentions may have started with my own desire to be the best at gifting, I think the best part of this experiment was really knowing those around me better and their different motivations and desires that get them through life.

I've been thinking (and writing) a lot about homes

I've been thinking (and writing) a lot about homes over the last week or so.

About how many of us struggle with our homes in particular this time of year, when we think we need a curated, current, and of course, clean canvas upon which to paint magical holiday scenes for our families (because if the carpet is old or we don't love the wall color, can it possibly facilitate magic?);

About how many of us may even avoid having loved ones in our homes to enjoy the holiday, or avoid sharing photos of our families gathered around the tree or the holiday table because the room doesn't look "styled" or the spread isn't impressively presented;

And about how all this long-building pressure is now juxtaposed against inflation, a recession, rising prices, and widespread economic uncertainty.

It made me think of the years I did Christmas as a newly single mom, with six of us crammed into a house so tiny I only had one small bookshelf to decorate and we couldn't all fit at the dining-room table at once. How sweet those memories are now, even though everything about our surroundings were less-than-ideal by current standards.

And my own childhood, when I was completely captivated by the sights, scents, and sounds of the holiday, even though my own home was decidedly dated at the time, the gifts were inexpensive, and the decor at least a decade old.

And of all the warm, hospitable homes I've been in over the years, so bursting with love and delicious smells and music and good conversation and laughter that the layout didn't matter, and I couldn't even tell you what the backsplash or countertops looked like because it didn't matter and nobody was focused on that, anyway.

Isn't that the kind of home you'd like to be in - to be the creator of - this holiday? I know I would. And here’s the thing: I have everything I need to get started. It starts with the home I already have: no matter how cramped, dated, untidy, or 'out of style' it may be.
