Realistic Hair & Skincare Routines: Episode 48

Last week we talked about our ever-evolving “mom style” and what looks we’re loving at this stage of life. This week we’re moving on to hairstyles, skincare, make-up and beauty routines.

Join Meagan and Sarah for much confusion and hilarity – and hopefully a little insight – on growing out short hair, going gray in our 30’s, being completely overwhelmed by skincare products, and making time in the daily routine for basic beauty and skincare.

LINKS MENTIONED:

  • Episode 47: Our Ever-Evolving “Mom Style”
  • Neutrogena Visibly Even BB Cream (Sarah wears “Light to Medium” color)
  • If you want more on the foundation / face make-up conversation, check out the second half of Episode 7 of The Style Hour
  • Some of our favorite drug-store lip glosses:
  • L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color
  • Burt’s Bees Lip Shine
  • Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss (this is the one Meagan once stole from Sarah) in Kiss Me Coral
  • Brush On Block Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Powder Sunscreen (goes on AFTER makeup, and Sarah’s much-younger sister swears by it)

I just looked at the sunscreen. I would love to know if you ladies use it. The sun screen is expensive but the refill seems reasonable. There is another brand “Mineral Fusion” that is bit cheaper. I wonder if it is as good.

Dayna, it’s my sister who recommended and she totally swears by it. Her fiance uses it too – so there’s nothing “shimmery/girly” about it. 🙂 I haven’t bought it (yet) but am definitely interested.

Great two-parter! I saw the same “Mineral Fusion” brush-on sunscreen as Dayna and am thinking about trying it — along with their other moisturizer/sunscreens. I’ve also used Origins’ A Perfect World moisturizer with SPF and it’s okay, but I’m not sure it’s worth the price tag (I got it on sale) and I’d prefer a mineral-based sunscreen. A little does go a long way, though. I’ve also heard GREAT things about Paula’s Choice moisturizer with SPF.

I use a cheaper SPF 30 sunscreen that I find at Target. It is Cetaphil Dermacontrol Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30. I have combination skin and have always struggled to find a moisturizer that doesnt cause break outs. I have been using this for awhile and I am very happy with it.

I’m interested to know what hair products you both use and also what type of curling iron you would recommend. I have frizzy, half curly shoulder-length hair that I can’t quite figure out. Thanks!

Julie, I don’t use a ton of product on my hair. I have it colored (at least the roots – thank you, grays) every 6 weeks and use a drug-store shampoo and conditioner when I wash every 3 days. I usually let it air dry (super frizz) and then brush it out and either flat iron or curl it with a curling iron. I have a 1.5 inch curling iron – I think I’d like one that is even a little fatter than that. I just got mine at Target. Sorry I’m not more help! The biggest thing for me figuring out my frizz/curl was keeping my hair long with long layers. And learning to curl it helped too. YouTube videos are always a good place to start. 🙂

I’ve had short hair for years now so I don’t think my advice will hold much water – but I have been using Crew hair paste (yes, the man’s stuff) for years and that’s really all I need at this length. I’m currently growing it out so I’ll be needing advice on product soon!

Ok, I’m coming in late here, but I just listened to this episode today and loved it! (I’ve been binge listening to back episodes for a few weeks now.) You ladies are actually quite sophisticated with your makeup routines, so I feel like I’m getting a push to up my own routine (which consists of a bit of tinted moisturizer I bought on a Sephora spree last year–that’s pretty much it. I don’t even wash my face at night. I need help). I just jotted down all the products you listed, but Sarah, you mentioned you had a few favorite drugstore mascaras. Can you name a few? Thanks!

This week's episode has elicited more comments and This week's episode has elicited more comments and emails than we've gotten in a LONG TIME. We're so glad the topic touched a nerve and appreciate every one of the notes we've received.

Speaking of "doneness" and all the feels about moving out of the baby-having years, this result from our listener survey surprised us. 72% of listeners who responded to the question about plans to grow their families said they are totally done. This is a big jump from previous surveys where we asked the same question (in 2021 59% said they were done; in 2019 47%).

New episode, based on this letter we received from New episode, based on this letter we received from listener Sarah (swipe to read). We're guessing more than a few of you can relate...

"Done having babies" and "Sad about the end of the little years" are two completely different mom-emotions, as Meagan and Sarah get into today, with the help of a thoughtful listener question. We look at how it's possible to be at peace with your family size and still experience grief at the identity shift that happens as your last babe gets big (and your bigs get huge). We reflect on what pangs us most about small kids growing bigger, how to accept the unfamiliar role of being (slightly) less needed, and what it means to embrace the season you find yourself in - whatever it is.

A few thoughts on family vacations . . . –writte A few thoughts on family vacations . . . –written by @catieparrish on our team, in partnership with our sponsor @visitflorida . . . #AD

There's a lot that isn't shown in a vacation highlight reel. The impatient kids, the out-of-order elevator, the lost ball cap that caused so many tears, the tighter-than-usual vehicle seating arrangements that prevent siblings from keeping their hands to themselves, the weary parents trying to juggle it all.

But - thankfully! - throughout the trip, there are moments that make you think, "Totally worth it." One of those moments, for me, was our first beach walk after arriving in @vspc. The kids were ecstatic to see the ocean, the view was stunning, and I could feel the stress of managing a million details melt away.

It's not that different, really, from anything else we do. We spend time, effort, and money to create and maintain a home that serves our family. It leads to the "worth it" moments of big weekend breakfasts and cozy family movie nights. We keep up the text thread, move stuff around on the calendar, and figure out childcare, so we can laugh with neighbors at a taproom. We put in the hours at work; for the paycheck, yes; but also to be able to say, "I helped do that."

I'm so happy our family got to have so many totally-worth-it moments in Florida. If you're interested in planning your own Florida vacation, click on this photo in our bio.
