The Mom Hour Co-Host and Executive Producer Meagan Francis joins Sarah Powers (and Sarah’s daughter, Allegra) to share how she started embroidery, her favorite creations, and her tips on getting started.
How I Started Writing
Several years ago, I sat in a Taco Bell with my three-year-old “wild child” son and my one-year-old daughter. A sweet older woman came up to me and said, “You’ve got your hands full with that one,” nodding to my son. I gave her a slight smile, not sure what to say—though her voice wasn’t laced with judgment. Instead, her face lit up as she recalled her own ‘spirited’ son, though he was now well into adulthood.
That night after the kids had gone to bed, I went to my computer and started writing—an urge I hadn’t felt in years. I didn’t want to forget how my stomach turned in knots at lunch. How it felt like everyone’s eyes were on me as I chased my son across the gray tile floors, worrying my baby would fall out of the high chair when I turned my back to her.
Five Pandemic Thanksgiving Traditions I’m Keeping Around
I won’t lie: Thanksgiving isn’t my favorite and after so much togetherness last year, I wanted to try to mix things up a bit on that oh-so-traditional holiday. So I came up with a few new Thanksgiving traditions last year to make the day just a bit more fun. And much to my surprise, they were a success!

Gift Guide For the Outdoor Adventuring Family
My husband and I share a love for all things outdoors. From wakeboarding to biking from snow skiing to pickleball – we like to dabble in a little bit of everything. We especially enjoy hiking and camping. We’ve hiked more than 70 miles in Banff National Park, backpacked in the Rocky Mountains, and trekked in the Great Smokey Mountains with twins in tow. On our adventures, we’ve learned that quality gear can make all the difference – particularly when you are camping with kids. Over the years, we’ve built up our stash by shopping secondhand and by adding gear to our Christmas gift lists.
