Navigating traditional employment while mothering small children brings up so many questions–from negotiating flexible schedules to getting hired while pregnant, promotion challenges and where to pump. In this month’s Voices interview Meagan aims to answer the most common questions in a conversation with Colleen Curtis, head of community at The Mom Project, an organization dedicated to building better workplace environments for moms, and helping mothers remain active in the workplace, while acknowledging our need for flexibility and respect in their role as a mom, particularly in the early years of parenting.

I was so excited for this episode but for me it missed the mark. It was wonderful to hear about strategies for maternity leave and to hear about the wonderful work of the Mom Project, but as a full time working mom of a 2 year old and a 4 year old (beyond the years of navigating pregnancy and pumping at work), I often feel like I’m flailing around looking for camaraderie in a space that’s missing the voices of others in my same position. I would love to see a follow up episode focused on moms of slightly older children that are navigating the work-life balance that comes with being pulled between work and after school activities, volunteering at school, figuring out childcare as children get older, and how to work around these issues if your employer truly can’t accommodate regular flex time. Just food for thought!
